Hello, everyone! Welcome to Episode 13 of Business English Made Easy. I’m Victoria, and today we’re diving into the language of financial performance. Understanding and discussing financial metrics is essential in the business world. Today, we’ll explore key phrases and vocabulary to help you confidently discuss financial performance.

First, let’s talk about revenue. Revenue is the total amount of money a company earns from its activities. You might hear, Our revenue increased by 10% this quarter. This means the company made 10% more money compared to the previous quarter. When discussing revenue, you can also use sales.

Next, let’s look at expenses. Expenses are the costs incurred in the process of earning revenue. For example, Our marketing expenses have decreased this year. This indicates that the money spent on marketing is lower than it was last year. Common types of expenses include operating expenses, administrative expenses, and cost of goods sold (COGS).

Profit is another crucial term. Profit is the money that remains after all expenses have been deducted from revenue. You might say, Our profit margin is improving. This means that the difference between revenue and expenses is growing, indicating better financial health. Related terms include net profit, gross profit, and operating profit.

Now, let’s talk about cash flow. Cash flow refers to the movement of money in and out of a business. Positive cash flow means more money is coming in than going out. You might hear, We need to improve our cash flow management. This implies focusing on ensuring there’s enough cash to cover expenses. Terms related to cash flow include operating cash flow, investment cash flow, and financing cash flow.

Balance sheet is another important financial statement. It provides a snapshot of a company’s financial position at a specific point in time. Key components of a balance sheet include assets, liabilities, and equity. For example, Our balance sheet shows strong asset growth. This indicates an increase in the company’s valuable resources.

When discussing financial performance, it’s also important to understand financial ratios. Ratios help analyze and compare financial data. For instance, the current ratio measures a company’s ability to pay short-term obligations. You might say, Our current ratio has improved to 1.5. This suggests that the company is better positioned to cover its short-term liabilities with its short-term assets.

Another useful ratio is the return on investment (ROI). ROI measures the profitability of an investment. You might hear, The ROI on our new project is 15%. This means the project is generating a 15% return on the money invested.

Break-even point is a term used to describe when a company’s revenue equals its expenses, resulting in neither profit nor loss. For example, We reached our break-even point in the third quarter. This indicates that the company covered all its costs for that period.

Lastly, let’s talk about forecasts. Financial forecasts are predictions about future financial performance based on historical data and market trends. You might say, Our sales forecast for next year looks promising. This suggests expected growth in sales based on current data.

Understanding these financial terms and how to discuss them can significantly enhance your business communication skills. It helps you make informed decisions and present your ideas more clearly and professionally.
