Hello, everyone! Welcome back to Business English Made Easy. I’m your host, Victoria, and this is Episode 19. Today, we’re going to talk about a crucial communication skill: polite interruptions. Interrupting someone can be tricky, but there are ways to do it respectfully and effectively. Let’s explore some techniques and phrases to help you navigate conversations with ease.

First, let’s discuss why and when to interrupt. Sometimes, you may need to interrupt to clarify a point, ask a question, or contribute an idea. It’s important to choose the right moment and to be mindful of the speaker’s flow. Use these opportunities to ensure the conversation stays on track and that everyone’s contributions are valuable.

When you need to seek clarification, use phrases like:

Excuse me, can I clarify something?

I’m sorry to interrupt, but could you please explain that point again?

May I ask a quick question to better understand your point?

These phrases show respect and indicate that you are engaged and interested in understanding the conversation better.

Example:

Excuse me, can I clarify something about the budget proposal?

I’m sorry to interrupt, but could you please explain that point again about the project timeline?

If you want to add to the conversation or share a relevant idea, try using these phrases:

May I add something here?

I’d like to contribute an idea, if I may.

Could I share a quick thought on this topic?

These phrases signal that you have something valuable to add and invite you to contribute to the discussion without being disruptive.

Example:

May I add something here about the marketing strategy?

I’d like to contribute an idea about improving customer service, if I may.

Sometimes, you might need to politely redirect the conversation if it’s going off-topic. Here’s how to do it:

Sorry to interrupt, but I think we’re getting a bit off track. Can we return to the main point?

Excuse me, but we need to focus on the agenda. Let’s get back to discussing the budget.

I’m sorry, but can we steer the conversation back to our current topic?

These phrases help bring the conversation back to its intended focus without dismissing anyone’s input.

Example:

Sorry to interrupt, but I think we’re getting a bit off track. Can we return to the sales report?

Excuse me, but we need to focus on the agenda. Let’s get back to discussing the budget.

When you need to encourage others to speak, use these phrases:

I’d love to hear Sarah’s thoughts on this project.

Can we give John a chance to share his perspective on the new policy?

I think Susan has something to add. Let’s hear from her.

Encouraging others to speak shows that you value their input and are facilitating a collaborative environment.

Lastly, when you’ve interrupted someone, it’s polite to acknowledge the interruption, and thank them for their patience. Use phrases like:

Example:

Thank you for letting me speak. Please, continue.

I appreciate your patience. Please go on with your presentation.

These phrases help smooth over any potential disruption caused by the interruption and show respect for the speaker.

Learning to interrupt politely is a valuable skill that can enhance your communication and help you navigate conversations more effectively. By using these techniques and phrases, you can ensure that your interruptions are respectful and contribute positively to the discussion.
